Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey is brought to life on stage by Box Tale Soup, with the help of just two human performers and seven hand-made puppets.
Remaining as faithful to the original work as possible, with almost all the dialogue taken directly from the original novel, the production tells the story of unlikely heroine Catherine Morland, a clergyman’s daughter who is perhaps a little too influenced by the delights of the Gothic novel. Her story of love, disappointment and many trials is set in a background where dark foreboding tends to get exaggerated, and genuine laugh-out-loud humour often reigns.
This heartwarming tale has been adapted entirely by the company has become a favourite of both confirmed Austen lovers and a new generation who are coming to Jane Austen’s touching stories for the first time.
Noel Byrne and Antonia Christophers formed Box Tale Soup in 2012. Their previous acting credits include the BBC’s Dr Who and The Hour, HBO’s award winning Game of Thrones, CBBC’s Mission 2110 and original work for the Royal Court Theatre, London and Contact Theatre, Manchester.
