“The conquest of the earth is not a pretty thing when you look into it too much”

Following their sold-out show in the Autumn, Scandal and Gallows return with their gripping one-man adaptation of Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, the book that inspired Apocalypse Now, for six performances. Join Marlow on the deck of his steamboat, as he tells the story of his journey down the Congo River deep into the dark, greedy heart of European colonialism.

“Great things will come of this company.”

★★★★
“Riveting… A voyage not to be missed”
The Sunday Times

Stripped back to the essentials – one man, the objects around him and his story – this adaptation draws out an intensely personal voyage from Conrad’s beautiful prose. It is a voyage back through Marlow’s fractured memories of his confrontation with the darkest truths of his society, a confrontation that led him to the very edge of his sanity. It is a voyage that throws up issues of race, memory and agency that still resonate today.

★★★★
“Breathless [and] beautifully performed… Clark is… captivating throughout”
