Inspired by her daughters’ personalities, Deborah Manson’s intricate and colourful heritage quilts are on display in our Common Room

The quilts I have made are gifts for my two daughters and are a celebration of their lives and my relationships with each of them.

Each quilt is made from dyed cloth, pieces of favourite outgrown clothes, found and donated fabric. The compositions and colours reflect each child’s distinctive personality.

My daughters and I worked together on drawings, paintings and collages on which the quilt designs are loosely based. The quilts also include fabrics we dyed at home and pieces of their sewing. My hope is that their involvement will lead to a strong sense of attachment with the quilts. Our collaborations begin the story of each quilt but I hope that their narratives will grow over time and they stay with my daughters, be cared for, repaired if necessary and perhaps be passed on and survive as heirlooms.

About the Artist

Deborah Manson studied Illustration at Central Saint Martins and went on to work as a designer and teacher. Later she gained an MA in Textiles from Chelsea College of Art where she further developed her interest in sustainable design.

Her approach to design is often playful and collaborative, using non digital and slow, craft based processes.
